Springtime HVAC Tips for Pet Owners

Reid M.

Living with pets sometimes requires some compromise — they can’t help it when they shed and find comfort in a different temperature range. In today’s post, local  heating and air conditioning  company 24/7 Local HVAC shares tips on how to care for your HVAC system while keeping you and your pets comfortable this season.

  1. Set the thermostat at 78 degrees.  Some people find 78 to 80 degrees a bit too warm, but pets are comfortable within that small range of temperatures. Ductless air conditioners and heat pumps offer more flexibility because they cool or heat single rooms, making them ideal if you have areas in your home where pets are kept out.
  1. Optimize airflow.  Make the most out of your  air conditioner  or heater by running a fan to increase airflow in the room. If you have a ceiling fan, run it counterclockwise during the cooling seasons to pull cool air from the floor. Run it clockwise during the heating seasons to push warm air from the ceiling. Also, make sure that the areas near registers are kept clear of furniture and other obstructions that could block airflow.
  1. Replace air filters regularly.  HVAC systems usually need new air filters every three months. However, pets introduce hair and dander that can fill air filters to capacity sooner. Make it a point to inspect your air filters at least once a month and replace them when full.
  1. Install an air purifier.  Air purifiers can be standalone units or can be integrated with your central HVAC system. In addition to scrubbing the air of indoor air pollutants, they also help get rid of smells and particles that may trigger allergies. If you have members of the household who are allergic to pet dander, consider installing an air purifier in your home’s common areas. Also, running a humidifier during the heating seasons can help reduce dry skin that causes pets to shed dander.
