Why Is My Air Conditioner So Loud?

Tobias H.

It’s completely normal for an air conditioner to make noise while it’s in operation. However, you should have a good idea of the level and kinds of noises that are normal for your air conditioning system. If it feels like the noise coming from your unit has gotten louder than ever, or if there’s a grinding sound coming from your air conditioner in Visalia, CA, this could be a sign that there’s a major issue that needs to be repaired within the system.

Older units are more likely to have a naturally louder operation than newer units, simply because the technology has advanced in newer HVAC systems to such an extent that you might barely even notice they’re running. However, just because a system is on the older side doesn’t mean it’s normal for it to operate with loud clangs and bangs. If you notice some of these unusual sounds starting to become louder and more prevalent, it’s a good idea to have a professional come in and check it out.

In some cases, there might be nothing wrong with the system, and all you need to do is add some sound-dampening blankets or other noise-reducing equipment. However, if there is a serious issue underlying the sounds you’re hearing, you’ll need to take more significant action to address the problem.

Here are a few of the most common sounds that might indicate a problem with your HVAC system:

  • Grinding: If you hear a grinding noise, the most likely culprit is a fan motor. There might be a worn bearing or other component that makes the sound of scratching or grinding while it’s in operation. Make sure you have a technician check out your motors if this is the case.
  • Rattling: If you hear a strange rattling noise coming from your exterior AC unit, it could be because something fell into the system, such as a stick or other outdoor debris. However, it could also be a sign that something has come loose, such as a bolt, screw or fastener, or it could be something in the compressor. The older a compressor gets, the louder it’s likely to be during operation and the more noises you are likely to notice.
  • Hissing: Strange hissing noises that occur when your air conditioner is running could be a problem with the ductwork rather than the air conditioner itself. You might have a leak somewhere in the ducts that needs to be addressed. But if you’re certain it’s coming from the actual AC unit, this could be a sign of a refrigerant leak. This is a problem that can only be handled by an HVAC professional, who is trained in how to find and repair these leaks and refill the refrigerant to the proper levels.
  • Popping: If you hear strange popping noises coming from your ductwork, this could be a sign that your ductwork is aging and may require some maintenance.
